Role Overview
As a DevOps Engineer, you will work between software development and infrastructure teams to make application build, testing, deployment, and operational processes more reliable.
The role requires hands-on technical ability. You may create CI/CD pipelines, automate infrastructure provisioning, manage containerized workloads, troubleshoot failed deployments, configure monitoring, and support applications running in cloud or hybrid environments.
You should be comfortable investigating problems across application, operating system, container, network, and infrastructure layers.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for application deployments.
- Automate build, testing, release, and deployment processes.
- Manage Linux-based development and production environments.
- Create and maintain Docker containers.
- Deploy and support containerized applications.
- Manage Kubernetes workloads where required.
- Provision infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code.
- Maintain application and infrastructure configuration.
- Automate repetitive operational tasks using scripts.
- Monitor application and infrastructure health.
- Investigate failed builds and deployments.
- Analyse logs and troubleshoot production issues.
- Work with developers to improve deployment processes.
- Maintain source code and configuration through Git.
- Support environment configuration across development, testing, staging, and production.
- Follow security and access-control practices.
- Maintain technical documentation and operational procedures.
CI/CD Pipeline Experience
Candidates should understand how source code moves from development to production.
Practical experience with tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Azure DevOps, or comparable platforms can be valuable.
You may be expected to configure pipelines for:
Code Checkout → Build → Testing → Artifact Creation → Deployment → Validation
Candidates should also understand pipeline failures and be able to identify whether an issue originates from source code, dependencies, configuration, infrastructure, credentials, or deployment processes.
Linux Administration
Linux knowledge is important for many DevOps environments.
Candidates should be comfortable with:
Linux Commands, File Permissions, Processes, Services, Package Management, Environment Variables, SSH, Logs, Disk Usage, CPU/Memory Monitoring and Basic Networking.
You should be able to investigate a server or application issue from the command line rather than depending entirely on graphical administration tools.
Docker & Containers
DevOps Engineers may be responsible for packaging and running applications using Docker.
Relevant knowledge includes:
Dockerfiles, Images, Containers, Volumes, Networks, Registries, Environment Variables and Container Logs.
Candidates should understand how to build images, start containers, inspect running workloads, troubleshoot failures, and manage application configuration.
Kubernetes
For Kubernetes-based environments, candidates may work with:
Pods, Deployments, Services, ConfigMaps, Secrets, Namespaces, Ingress, Persistent Volumes, Scaling and Rolling Updates.
Mid- and senior-level candidates should be able to troubleshoot common issues such as failed deployments, unhealthy pods, configuration problems, resource constraints, and application connectivity.
Infrastructure as Code
Experience with Terraform is valuable for environments where infrastructure is provisioned through code.
Candidates may work with infrastructure definitions for compute resources, networking, storage, databases, security rules, load balancers, or Kubernetes environments.
Exposure to Ansible, CloudFormation, or similar configuration and infrastructure automation tools can also be useful.
Cloud Exposure
Depending on the project, DevOps Engineers may work with AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
Useful knowledge can include:
- Compute and virtual machines
- Storage
- Virtual networks
- IAM and access control
- Load balancing
- Auto scaling
- Managed databases
- Container services
- Monitoring and logging
This role focuses on DevOps practices and delivery automation rather than positioning the candidate primarily as a Cloud Engineer.
Scripting & Automation
Candidates should be able to automate routine tasks rather than repeatedly performing them manually.
Useful scripting skills include:
Bash / Shell Scripting, Python or PowerShell.
Typical automation may involve deployments, backups, log processing, environment configuration, health checks, file management, or operational maintenance.
Monitoring & Troubleshooting
A DevOps Engineer should know how to investigate application and infrastructure problems.
Exposure to tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/Elastic Stack, CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, or similar platforms can be beneficial.
Candidates should understand basic monitoring concepts involving:
CPU, Memory, Disk, Network, Application Logs, Error Rates, Service Availability and Alerts.
The ability to troubleshoot systematically is more important than simply listing monitoring tools on a resume.
Git & Version Control
Candidates should have practical Git knowledge, including:
Clone, Pull, Commit, Push, Branch, Merge and Conflict Resolution.
Infrastructure configuration, deployment scripts, pipeline definitions, and application configuration should normally be managed through version control.
Security Fundamentals
DevOps Engineers should follow secure operational practices.
Relevant knowledge can include:
IAM, Least-Privilege Access, Secrets Management, SSH Security, Environment Variables, Patch Management, Container Security and Credential Protection.
Candidates should never hard-code passwords, API keys, or production credentials inside repositories or deployment scripts.
1–2 Years Experience
Candidates at this level should have a strong foundation in Linux, Git, CI/CD, Docker, scripting, and basic cloud services.
You should be capable of supporting existing pipelines, troubleshooting basic build failures, deploying applications, checking logs, and assisting with infrastructure operations.
Hands-on project experience is important.
3–5 Years Experience
Mid-level DevOps Engineers should be able to independently manage CI/CD pipelines and deployment environments.
You may be expected to work with Jenkins or equivalent CI/CD platforms, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, cloud infrastructure, monitoring, Linux, and automation scripts.
Candidates should demonstrate experience solving real deployment and infrastructure problems rather than only configuring tools in training environments.
Senior DevOps Engineer Roles
Senior candidates may take ownership of deployment architecture, infrastructure automation, reliability, and operational standards.
Responsibilities can include designing CI/CD strategies, managing Kubernetes environments, reviewing Terraform code, improving observability, reducing deployment failures, strengthening security controls, optimizing infrastructure, and mentoring junior engineers.
Senior engineers may also work closely with development, security, cloud, and platform teams on technical architecture decisions.
Technical Skills
Operating Systems: Linux
Version Control: Git
CI/CD: Jenkins / GitHub Actions / GitLab CI/CD / Azure DevOps

What We Look For
A strong DevOps candidate should be able to explain real technical situations.
For example:
- How did you troubleshoot a failed deployment?
- How did you design or improve a CI/CD pipeline?
