About the Role
As a Software Engineer, you will work with engineering teams to build and maintain software used by customers, employees, or business systems. Your work may include developing new features, improving existing modules, fixing production issues, writing automated tests, reviewing code, and contributing to technical design discussions.
The exact technology stack will vary by employer. Candidates are not expected to know every programming language or framework listed in a job posting. Strong programming fundamentals and the ability to learn the required stack are important.
What You Will Do
- Design and develop software features based on business and technical requirements.
- Write clean, maintainable, and testable code.
- Understand existing codebases before implementing changes.
- Develop and integrate APIs and software components.
- Work with relational or NoSQL databases where required.
- Write unit and integration tests.
- Debug application defects and production issues.
- Review logs and identify root causes of software failures.
- Participate in code reviews.
- Use Git for source-code management.
- Collaborate with product managers, QA engineers, designers, and other developers.
- Participate in technical discussions and solution design.
- Improve application performance, reliability, and maintainability.
- Document important technical decisions and implementation details.
- Follow secure software-development practices.
Required Technical Skills
Candidates should have a strong foundation in software engineering concepts, including:
Programming: Good knowledge of at least one programming language.
Data Structures & Algorithms: Understanding of arrays, strings, collections, stacks, queues, trees, searching, sorting, and basic algorithmic problem solving.
Object-Oriented Programming: Classes, objects, inheritance, abstraction, encapsulation, and polymorphism where applicable.
Databases: Understanding of SQL, tables, relationships, queries, indexes, and basic database design.
APIs: Knowledge of REST APIs, HTTP methods, request/response handling, JSON, authentication, and error handling.
Version Control: Practical knowledge of Git and collaborative development workflows.
Testing: Understanding of unit testing, integration testing, debugging, and defect resolution.
Programming & Technology Exposure
Depending on the engineering team, candidates may work with technologies such as:
Java, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, C++, Go, or other programming languages.
Frameworks and supporting technologies will depend on the employer’s application architecture.
The role may also involve exposure to SQL databases, NoSQL databases, REST APIs, messaging systems, caching, cloud platforms, containers, CI/CD pipelines, and modern development tools.
Candidates do not need experience with all these technologies.
Freshers / Entry-Level Software Engineers
Fresh graduates should have strong programming fundamentals and be able to demonstrate practical coding ability.
Employers may evaluate freshers on:
- Programming fundamentals
- Data structures and algorithms
- Object-oriented concepts
- SQL fundamentals
- Problem-solving ability
- Basic API concepts
- Debugging
- Academic or personal projects
Freshers should include GitHub projects, internships, coding projects, hackathons, open-source contributions, or deployed applications on their resumes when available.
Being able to explain your own code and design decisions is more valuable than simply listing many technologies.
Mid-Level Software Engineers
Mid-level engineers are generally expected to independently deliver software features and take ownership of assigned modules.
Candidates should be comfortable with:
- Translating requirements into technical implementations.
- Developing production-quality code.
- Designing and integrating APIs.
- Working with databases.
- Debugging complex application issues.
- Writing automated tests.
- Reviewing code.
- Understanding application architecture.
- Participating in deployments and production support.
- Estimating and delivering engineering tasks.
Experience improving an existing production system is particularly valuable.
Senior Software Engineers
Senior Software Engineers may take ownership of larger technical components and influence engineering decisions.
Responsibilities may include:
- Designing scalable software components.
- Making technical design decisions.
- Reviewing complex code changes.
- Improving application architecture.
- Identifying performance bottlenecks.
- Resolving critical production issues.
- Improving reliability and engineering quality.
- Defining coding and testing practices.
- Breaking complex requirements into technical tasks.
- Mentoring junior engineers.
- Collaborating with product and engineering leadership.
Senior candidates should be prepared to discuss architecture decisions, trade-offs, scalability, reliability, performance, and real production problems they have solved.
Database Knowledge
Software Engineers should understand how applications store and retrieve data.
Depending on the application, relevant technologies may include MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle, MongoDB, Redis, or similar databases.
Candidates should understand queries, joins, indexes, transactions, data modelling, and database performance fundamentals appropriate to their experience level.
API Development & Integration
Modern applications frequently communicate through APIs.
Candidates may be expected to understand REST architecture, HTTP methods, status codes, JSON, authentication, authorization, validation, pagination, error handling, and API testing.
Experienced engineers may also contribute to API design, versioning, security, documentation, and performance improvements.
Testing & Code Quality
Software Engineers are expected to take responsibility for the quality of their code.
This may include writing unit tests, participating in integration testing, reviewing pull requests, reproducing defects, fixing bugs, and verifying changes before release.
Engineers should aim to produce code that is understandable and maintainable by other developers.
Cloud & DevOps Exposure
Some Software Engineer positions may involve working with AWS, Microsoft Azure, GCP, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar technologies.
For this role, these technologies should generally support software delivery rather than replace the primary focus on software engineering.
What We Look For
A suitable candidate should demonstrate:
- Strong logical and analytical thinking.
- Good programming fundamentals.
- Ability to understand unfamiliar code.
- Practical debugging skills.
- Attention to software quality.
- Clear technical communication.
- Ability to work collaboratively.
- Willingness to learn new technologies.
- Ownership of assigned engineering tasks.
- Understanding of the software development lifecycle.
What to Include in Your Resume
Keep your Software Engineer resume focused on actual engineering work.
Mention your programming languages, projects, applications developed, APIs built, databases used, Git experience, testing knowledge, production responsibilities, internships, certifications, and measurable engineering achievements.
Instead of writing only “worked on application development,” explain what you built or improved.
For example, experienced candidates can mention improvements in response time, application reliability, test coverage, deployment efficiency, defect reduction, or system performance when those figures can be supported.
